Tengo mucha pena en informarles de la muerte de John Newhouse. John era un amigo y colega querido para muchos de nosotros; era una persona realmente maravillosa. Además de sus logros como miembro de la facultad y administracion en Southwestern College, John era fundador y miembro de BINACOM y contribuyó generosamente a su crecimieto.
Habrá una celebración a su vida el lunes 17 de Julio, en Mayan Hall en Southwestern College.

Nació en la ciudad de México, el 11 de agosto de 1953. Obtuvo la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Información por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Cursa un diplomado en inglés. Ha realizado diplomados en Producción Editorial, Desarrollo de Habilidades de Razonamiento y Formación de Valores. Su principal área de trabajo es la Comunicación Organizacional. Su experiencia profesional es en el área de comunicación social y planeación estratégica en el sector público y docencia en el sector educativo. Nacio en Bellas Fuentes Michoacán, México, el 14 de junio de 1960. Obtuvo la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Comunicación por la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. Su principal área de trabajo es la Comunicación Organizacional. Su experiencia profesional es en el área de planeación de comunicación y, en el sector académico, laborando en diversas áreas de la misma universidad como docente y como administrativa. Founding member and first vice president of BINACOM. Professor, Southwestern College, Chula Vista, California 1972-present. Co-founder of the Telemedia program at Southwestern. Taught courses in photography, film and video production in the School of Fine Arts and Communication. Curated, organized and participated in numerous art exhibitions, lectures, workshops and conferences. Advisor to Links Program ( to increase participation of woman students in technological careers). Past president of the American Federation of Teachers at Southwestern College. Coordinated the video documentation of the International arts event Insite94 by five member institutions of the BINACOM. Founded Borderlands Television with other members of BINACOM to produce Bi-national programing of and for the region. Member of the Broadcast Education Association, American Film Institute and National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Photographic Arts. Founding board member of the Normal Heights Community Development Corporation and Save Our Canyons. Published Blended Beauty, This is a Book, co-published Scenes of Wonders and Curiosity in Southern California. Hope Shaw received her M.A.from San Diego State University and her B.A. from Smith College. She also studied in the Department of Drama, University of Bristol and at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Her professional media work includes eight years as Documentary-Public Affairs Producer, Channel 10; Writer-Producer, University of Washington Medical School and other video and documentary projects. Among her selected papers and awards are: "The Global Village in a Digital Age,"--Fifty Years Development Communication, New Delhi, India, 1998; "Use of Video in Psychiatry," Hyderabad, India, 1992; "The Two Faces of Baja," (with Natalie Best); National Federation of Press Women, First Place Documentary; "From This Day Forward," documentary with commentary by Margaret Mead, International Family Conference, Rome, Italy. Laura Castañeda is an adjunct professor at City College where she teaches introductory newswriting for broadcasting and co-facilitates the city's only weekly student newscast, Newscene. In addition, Castañeda is a freelance journalist and operates her own video production company, Press Pass International. Most recently, Castañeda reported for Channel 4 Cox Cable's "San Diego Insider News Magazine Show." Prior to that she reported and anchored at KGTV, the ABC affiliate in San Diego. Ms. Castañeda has been nominated twice by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 1998, she was awarded top honors by the Society of Professional Journalists for investigative reporting. In 1997 she also received a first place award by the San Diego Press Club for a series of reports on immigration. Ms. Castañeda began her television news career in 1987 as a production assistant at WLS-TV, ABC in Chicago. Patricia Geist received her Ph.D. in Communication from Purdue University in 1985. She is a Professor in the School of Communication at San Diego State University where she teaches organizational communication, health communication, ethnographic research methods, and gender and organizational communication. Her research interests focus on negotiating identity, ideology, and control, particularly in health and illness. Her book, Negotiating the Crisis: DRGs and the Transformation of Hospitals (with Monica Hardesty) published in 1992 examines communication among nurses, physicians, and hospital administrators as they negotiate a controversial change in hospital policy and structure. In addition, she co-edited with Linda A. M. Perry a book of biographies and narrative studies, entitled Courage of Conviction: Women's Words, Women's Wisdom, published in 1997. Her third book (co-authored with Eileen Berlin Ray and Barbara Sharf) Communicating Health: Personal, Social, and Political Complexities was published in 2003.Universidad de las Californias

Tiene estudios de Licenciatura en Comunicación por la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, actualmente se encuentra por terminar la Maestra en Educación de la Universidad Pedagógica Nacional. Ha cursado los seminarios de Administracion de Negocios Familiares por el ITESM. y el seminario de Metodología de la Investigación por la UPN. Ha sido coordinador y reportero de la Revista Ciclos; conductor del programa de radio en UABC 1630 AM: "Sin Máscaras." Reportero de notas policíacas en el noticiero "Hoy por hoy" del Canal 45. Fue catedrático de UDC en materias de periodismo; producción de radio, televisión y edición de video. En investigación se ha enfocado a la ética en el ejercicio periodístico y el estudio del periodismo bajo riesgo. Actualmente es coordinador de la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Comunicación en UDC.

Daniel C. Hallin received his B.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught in the Communication department at UCSD since 1980. His books include The "Uncensored War": The Media and Vietnam and "We Keep America on Top of the World": Television Journalism and the Public Sphere. His work focuses on the political role of the news media, and he has written on the media and war, coverage of elections, and the development of journalism as a profession. Magalí Muriá es estudiante de doctorado en la Universidad de California en San Diego. Cuenta con una maestría en Comunicación Internacional de la Universidad de Boston y estudió la licenciatura en en Relaciones Internacionales, en El Colegio de México. Magalí ha trabajado por varios años en instituciones gubernamentales y no-gubernamentales de la región fronteriza. Ruth Wallen's photographs, installations and artists books have been widely exhibited including solo exhibitions at the Exploratorium, New Langton Arts, and Franklin Furnace as well as public installations at the Tijuana River Estuary and San Bernardino Children's Forest. Major themes in her art work and critical writing include promoting ecological awareness and the development of border culture. Two recent web projects include, If Frogs Sicken and Die What Will Happen to the Princes? and a documentation of Jewish/Palestinian dialogue. Ruth teaches at the University of California, San Diego, and is also on the Master of Fine Arts Program faculty at Goddard College. She was a Fulbright lecturer in photography at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Tijuana. She recieved her B.A. from Swarthmore College and M.F.A. from UCSD.Center for Research in Computing and the Arts

Kristin C Moran (Ph.D. University of Washington) joined the faculty at the University of San Diego in 1999. Her research interests include international communication and the consequences of the technological interconnectedness of cultures on an increasingly smaller globe. Dr. Moran also researches the potential impacts of television on children and adolescents. Currently she is bridging these two interests and looking at the expansion of children's television networks in a global context. Dr. Moran teaches classes on international media, theories of media, children and electronic media and other media studies courses.
